Calling developers! What do you think of the HCA implementation

January 28, 2026Australian Digital Health Agency

Summary

The Australian Digital Health Agency is developing and testing a new FHIR-based directory for healthcare providers. This aims to establish the foundation for interoperability across the entire health system by providing near real-time information about providers' services from a single national access point.

Details

The Australian Digital Health Agency (ADHA) has launched a call for developers to test the 'Health Connect Australia Provider Directory FHIR Implementation Guide.' This new directory is intended to replace the existing Healthcare Provider Directory and will integrate data from multiple sources, including AHPRA and the Healthcare Identifiers Service. The system aims to enable searching and exchanging information about over 970,000 providers through a single, reliable source with near real-time updates. Technically, it utilizes FHIR-based interoperability standards and open APIs, establishing a national trust network equipped with authentication, authorization, and validation protocols. This initiative is part of the 'Health Connect Australia Program' to facilitate safe health information sharing across all Australian settings. The guide is scheduled for publication in March, following a testing period.
