Operationalizing MIABIS in HL7 FHIR: Enabling Interoperable Biobank Data Exchange
Definitions to data flow: Operationalizing MIABIS in HL7 FHIR |
Masaryk University created nine interoperable FHIR profiles covering the core MIABIS standard.
Summary
This study operationalized the conceptual model MIABIS using HL7 FHIR to address biobank data interoperability challenges. This enables the exchange of both organizational and sample-level data in a machine-readable format, promoting data utilization in biomedical research.
Key Players
Details
The paper addresses the challenge that biobanks and biomolecular resources generate complex data structures from diverse sources, including healthcare systems and national registries. The lack of standardized, machine-readable formats has limited interoperability and data reuse. The researchers systematically evaluated established standards like HL7 FHIR and OMOP CDM for structuring sample-related data. They developed a pragmatic, operational implementation of MIABIS using FHIR, enabling support for complex biobank structures and integration with federated data infrastructures. Key technical achievements include creating nine interoperable FHIR profiles covering core MIABIS entities. Furthermore, an open-source Python library was developed to abstract FHIR interactions and validate MIABIS-compliant data. This tool was successfully integrated into an ETL process at the Czech Node of BBMRI-ERIC for real-world sample-related data demonstration. Separately, organizational-level compatibility was demonstrated by converting the BBMRI-ERIC Directory structure into FHIR. This work delivers a machine-readable, interoperable implementation that integrates MIABIS with HL7 FHIR. This capability facilitates the exchange of both organizational and sample-level data across biobanks and health information systems, significantly enhancing data discoverability, reuse, and cross-institutional collaboration in biomedical research.
