In 2024, only 49% of end-user clinicians agreed that their EHR provided expected integration with outside organizations. Furthermore, the report notes that increased API availability does not guarantee higher satisfaction. While vendors often measure interoperability by counting proprietary APIs, KLAS data shows this count does not correlate with a vendor's ability to meet integration goals. Although many support FHIR R4 and USCDI classes, further work is needed to ensure the breadth of data required by healthcare organizations. Another major hurdle is data sharing between payers and providers, which stems from a lack of trust. This deficit contributes to unnecessary administrative costs. While regulatory mandates (like CMS-0057-F) are pushing for bulk FHIR API usage, KLAS concludes that success requires not just strong technology, but also fostering transparent collaboration and aligning goals among all stakeholders.
