Connect-TBI: National collaboration to revolutionise traumatic brain injury care -

October 8, 2025Monash University

Summary

A national initiative led by Monash University researchers has launched Connect-TBI, bringing together over 60 experts across Australia. The project aims to fundamentally transform care for patients with moderate to severe traumatic brain injury (msTBI) and establish a nationally representative data asset.

Details

The Connect-TBI program is spearheaded by Monash University researchers to improve msTBI care quality across Australia. To address the approximately 11,000 annual episodes of msTBI, it brings together expertise from clinicians, researchers, data scientists, and various stakeholders. The initiative aims to establish a sustainable data foundation by leveraging existing infrastructure and emerging digital health capabilities. A key technical feature is the integration of clinical, biomarker, imaging, and psychosocial data using the Clinical-Biomarker-Imaging-Modifier (CBI-M) classification framework. From an IT perspective, the program plans to build an interoperable and future-proof data pipeline by utilizing national infrastructure such as the National Health Data Hub and adhering to HL7 FHIR standards. This platform is designed not only for data collection but also for defining national quality indicators, developing localized neuroprognostication tools, and providing dashboards for real-time performance improvement, thereby informing policy and resource allocation.
