Summary

The Google Open Health Stack team has released 'Kotlin FHIR,' a new open-source library supporting the FHIR data model. This enables consistent development of FHIR applications across multiple platforms, including Android, iOS, and Web.

Details

The Google Open Health Stack team aims to accelerate digital health innovation by releasing 'Kotlin FHIR' (currently in alpha). This library implements the HL7® FHIR® data model on Kotlin Multiplatform (KMP), allowing developers to build and deploy FHIR apps and tools from a single codebase across multiple platforms: Android, iOS, and Web. Previously, existing FHIR libraries often had platform-specific dependencies, making them unsuitable for KMP development. Kotlin FHIR solves this by providing a modern, lightweight implementation with no platform-specific dependencies, significantly improving both development efficiency and solution scalability. This technology is crucial as FHIR grows in importance as a global standard for data exchange. Google has previously supported the ecosystem with tools like the Android FHIR SDK and FHIR Data Pipes, which are currently used by health workers covering over 75 million people across Sub-Saharan Africa and South/Southeast Asia. Kotlin FHIR facilitates building scalable applications that can reach more patients at a lower development cost, especially in low-resource settings.
