Summary

This study demonstrated that Patient-Generated Health Data (PGHD) from wearable devices can be integrated into the European Health Data Space (EHDS) using FHIR standards. By utilizing Garmin devices and a Fitrockr hub, a prototype was built to securely transfer structured data.

Details

The research addressed the challenges of clinically applying PGHD derived from wearable devices. While FHIR is recognized as a widely accepted standard for facilitating structured health data exchange, technical and regulatory barriers limit integration into large-scale regional systems like EHDS. The study developed a prototype using the Garmin Vívoactive 4 smartwatch to collect PGHD and integrate it into an FHIR server via a Fitrockr hub. This demonstrated that heterogeneous data—including physiological measurements and survey responses—could be standardized and securely transferred for Electronic Health Records (EHR). This approach confirms the technical feasibility and scalability of integrating PGHD, supporting EHDS objectives. Furthermore, it suggests a pathway for personal data to be incorporated into medical decision-making while complying with international regulations such as GDPR.
