Details

The Australian Digital Health Agency (ADHA) is undertaking a comprehensive rearchitecture of Australia's entire digital health ecosystem as part of the National Digital Health Strategy. Key initiatives include planning for a full national Health Information Exchange (HIE), for which design work is currently underway. To ensure interoperability, efforts are focused on linking national identifiers for providers, consumers, and organizations with standardized clinical terminology. Notably, they have established an FHIR accelerator to promote the implementation of the standard, which originated in Australia. Modernization efforts also target My Health Record, adding features such as sharing aged support plans and enabling data transfer (Aged Care Transfer Summary) for paramedics moving patients from aged care to acute hospitals. The next major step planned is the introduction of e-prescribing. Legally, there are mandates set to require that pathology and diagnostic imaging results be shared with consumers via their My Health Record, strengthening both data access and consumer control rights.
