Challenges and Progress in Health Information Interoperability: The Importance of FHIR-Based EHR

In Peru, a technical integration and testing event called “Conectat n” is being held to demonstrate the interoperability of electronic health record (EHR) systems. This aims for a state where patient information is always available, regardless of where the patient receives care, which is essential for ensuring continuity of medical services. The importance lies in its foundation on international standards. Specifically, EHR guidelines adopt FHIR (Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources), built upon the international norm HL7 (Health Level Seven). This allows different systems to exchange information using common data structures and vocabularies. The article emphasizes that true interoperability requires defining common data structures and rules, rather than simply copying screens. It also highlights a challenge: the existence of a separate platform for telemedicine (Teleatiendo) which does not fully integrate with the EHR, leading to gaps in patient information continuity. This underscores the ongoing challenges in ensuring complete continuity of patient records. This progress demonstrates the critical importance of digital transformation and commitment to international standardization within Peru's healthcare system.
