Africa CDC Launches 'Africa on FHIR' to Improve Health Data Communication

The Africa CDC has strengthened its digital health initiatives through close collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO), notably at the 2024 Global Digital Health Network Forum. This partnership aims to improve digital health governance, enhance pandemic preparedness, and develop national digital health strategies. A key initiative is the 'Africa on FHIR' project. This project aims to standardize the exchange of health data across the continent, facilitating seamless communication between various digital health platforms. Furthermore, in collaboration with Smart Africa, the CDC is implementing the 'Digital Health Blueprint'. This strategic roadmap guides African countries in developing and adopting digital health solutions while considering local specificities and infrastructure needs. The Africa CDC continues its efforts toward the Africa HealthTech Summit 2025 in Kigali. It remains committed to promoting Universal Health Coverage (UHC) and strengthening the resilience of healthcare systems across the continent. These initiatives demonstrate a determination to transform African healthcare systems using digital technology, improving access to care, service quality, and emergency response capacity.
