January 16, 2025The Sequoia Project

Summary

The Sequoia Project designated eClinicalWorks as the eighth Qualified Health Information Network (QHIN) within the TEFCA community under ASTP. This expands the national interoperability network and strengthens the foundation for health information sharing.

Details

The Sequoia Project, serving as the Recognized Coordinating Entity (RCE) for the Assistant Secretary for Technology Policy's (ASTP) Trusted Exchange Framework and Common Agreement (TEFCA), announced that eClinicalWorks has joined the TEFCA community as a QHIN. It joins other major players like CommonWell Health Alliance, Epic Nexus, and Health Gorilla. The designation expands the scope of the national health information sharing backbone. To date, over nine million documents have been retrieved via TEFCA Exchange, with an accelerating exchange rate (over 4.5 million exchanged in Oct-Nov 2024). The Sequoia Project continues its role as RCE by overseeing QHIN designation and adoption of the TEFCA Exchange. Key activities include advancing the FHIR Roadmap for TEFCA Exchange, rolling out additional exchange purposes, and guiding the transition to permanent self-governance by the community. This effort aims to solve real-world interoperability challenges in healthcare data exchange.
