This article reports on the initial successful results of the PLUGIN (Platform for exchange and reuse of clinical data Netherlands) pilot project at Radboudumc. The initiative involved collaboration between Expertisecentrum Zorgalgoritmen, Dutch Hospital Data (DHD), and Integraal Kankercentrum Nederland (IKNL). They standardized medical data from electronic patient records (EPR) into the FHIR format and utilized federative technology via vantage6 to safely extract and utilize this data. Specifically, they successfully identified head-and-neck cancer patients in the EPR and automatically provided information regarding diagnosis and tumor stage to the Netherlands Cancer Registry (NKR). This pilot was groundbreaking for combining both the FHIR data layer and vantage6 technology in a real-world hospital setting. PLUGIN aims not only for data sharing but also provides a foundation for secondary use, such as AI-assisted coding and clinical decision support. It creates an environment where healthcare professionals can focus on patient care rather than documentation.
