Summary

The Dutch pilot project 'PLUGIN' achieved safe and efficient medical data sharing by combining standardization into FHIR format with federative technology. This is expected to lead to better quality care and reduced administrative burden.

Details

This article reports on the results of the 'PLUGIN' pilot project in the Netherlands, a clinical data exchange platform. PLUGIN standardizes medical data from electronic patient records (EPR) into the FHIR format and uses federative technology via vantage6 for secure analysis and sharing. This allows sensitive medical information to be utilized across multiple hospitals without centralizing data, thereby protecting privacy. A specific example was the successful pilot conducted by Radboudumc and the PLUGIN team, automatically providing head-and-neck cancer patient data to the Dutch Cancer Registry (NKR). Furthermore, advanced use cases are being developed, such as AI-assisted coding support for clinical records and predicting hospitalization/length of stay. It is shown that combining FHIR standards and vantage6 technology enables faster and more accurate data extraction, ultimately contributing to improved patient care quality.
