A major challenge in healthcare IT is that recorded patient data often becomes trapped within 'black box' systems, hindering research, quality monitoring, and data exchange. To address this, a conceptual model called 'ZIB (Zorginformatiebouwsteen)' has been introduced. ZIB defines the necessary data elements for patients or care processes, making it technology-agnostic and broadly applicable. However, since ZIB information cannot be processed directly by IT systems, conversion into FHIR (Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources) technical infrastructure is required. This process involves several steps: first, identifying which data elements need recording; second, mapping the ZIB content to the most appropriate FHIR resource (e.g., Patient-resource for patient data, Observation-resource for body temperature). Furthermore, consistency of terminology is ensured by linking each ZIB data element to specific attributes within the FHIR resource and utilizing international standards like SNOMED CT and LOINC. Because a single FHIR resource is often insufficient to contain all details of a full ZIB, an extension via a FHIR profile is necessary. This allows for adding context specific to the Dutch setting or incorporating 'Extensions' to supplement data not available in standard resources. Through this conversion from ZIB to FHIR, healthcare data transcends mere record-keeping; it becomes universally usable as a common language across all systems, enabling more efficient and secure data exchange and advanced research analysis.
