Summary

The Ministry of Health announced the launch of the 'Taiwan Medical Information Standard Platform' on March 12th. The initiative aims to accelerate smart healthcare and medical data standardization by implementing international standards like FHIR and establishing an AI application environment.

Details

This platform addresses the current challenge where electronic health records (EHRs) are incompatible across different hospitals, leading to fragmented data. To solve this, the Ministry will first adopt FHIR, a standard widely used in the US, to ensure interoperability of medical data. Furthermore, by integrating with international standards such as LOINC and SNOMED CT, it aims to enhance data portability. For unifying rules—such as those for billing or quality assessment—the platform adopts CQL (Clinical Quality Language). This allows EHRs to automatically check if diagnoses and prescriptions comply with established norms, thereby improving medical quality and administrative efficiency. Additionally, to ensure that AI applications can be used across all hospitals without being tied to a specific system, the SMART on FHIR standard will be introduced. Through these efforts, Taiwan aims to become a global leader in health data integration, building an AI healthcare ecosystem.
