Android 16 to Expand Beyond Pixel: Functional Enhancements and FHIR Interoperability Boost

Google has released the fourth beta version of Android 16 for developers. This version is considered a near-final release, with all application behavior and background functions finalized. Initially limited to Pixel devices, this update expands testing availability to more device manufacturers. The major functional enhancements include system-wide direct notifications with progress bars and the Audio Share feature, which allows streaming audio from one phone to multiple Bluetooth headphones or earbuds simultaneously. Technically, it introduces an Adaptive Refresh Rate to conserve battery by automatically adjusting screen refresh rates. Developers also gain finer control over haptic feedback in their applications. In camera capabilities, a hybrid system simplifies exposure and ISO adjustment, while video recording expands the range of controls for color temperature and saturation. Crucially for healthcare IT, the update enhances the Health Connect platform, allowing users to share electronic health records and medical data between different applications using the FHIR format. Additionally, accessibility improvements include the ability for LE Audio device users to switch between built-in hearing aid microphones and the phone's microphone during calls.
