The Australian healthcare system currently stores electronic data in various systems and formats across different providers (hospitals, GPs, aged care). This fragmentation makes exchanging crucial patient information difficult or impossible, often forcing patients to repeat their medical history or undergo unnecessary tests. Interoperability is defined as the ability to seamlessly exchange data between services and systems. CSIRO's Australian e-Health Research Centre (AEHRC) is addressing this challenge through a collaboration called 'Sparked,' involving government bodies, HL7 Australia, and industry partners. This initiative focuses on applying Fast Health Interoperability Resources (FHIR), a specific data standard for Australian healthcare. Standardizing data collection means that records—such as complaints or diagnostic images created by a GP—can travel with the patient to any point of care. The completion of the Australian Core Data for Interoperability aims to establish national standards across multiple use cases, including aged care. AEHRC is also developing digital care tools, such as the MoTHer platform, ensuring they reflect the latest FHIR guidelines. Furthermore, research highlights unique interoperability challenges in the aging care sector due to multiple points of care and workforce/digital literacy issues.
