According to eHealth Exchange, an FHIR-based ecosystem is being built in Utah connecting public health agencies, providers, and payers. Previously, connectivity was complicated, requiring multiple insurance companies (payers) to integrate separate tabs into EHRs. eHealth Exchange addressed this by proposing a 'hub-and-spoke' model with existing national technical connections. This allows participating healthcare facilities to utilize the connection simply as an app, bypassing lengthy individual negotiations and technical setup processes. Testing Prior Authorization APIs is a major success point; real-time confirmation of coverage for procedures or services has proven crucial.
