Telstra Health Tapped to FHIR-up My Health Record Architecture

More Australians are accessing and sharing their digital health records from the national system, necessitating an upgrade of the system's data architecture. The Australian Digital Health Agency (ADHA) has therefore initiated a project to overhaul the core data structure of the My Health Record system. This initiative is critical due to increased usage; ADHA CEO Amanda Cattermole noted an over 60% increase in views of pathology and diagnostic imaging reports in 2024 alone. The existing Clinical Document Architecture (CDA) is struggling to cope with this surge in data access and sharing. As part of the upgrade, Telstra Health was awarded a A$33 million ($21 million) contract specifically to upgrade the CDA for My Health Record. This move aims to ensure that the national system can handle the growing volume and variety of shared medical information, thereby improving interoperability and supporting future digital health mandates in Australia.
