Summary

Spanish healthcare professionals developed 'Seleida,' an automated tool that evaluates and classifies Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) using electronic health record data. The model shows potential to reduce preventable exacerbations by up to 25% through early detection and treatment optimization.

Details

Doctors belonging to the Respiratory Working Group of the Spanish Primary Care Medicine Society (SEMERGEN), José David Maya Viejo and Fernando M. Navarro Ros, developed 'Seleida,' an automated tool for evaluating and classifying Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) using routine electronic health record data. This model is highlighted as a milestone in respiratory medicine and sector digitalization. The study reveals that Seleida can automatically identify patients with poorly controlled COPD using only two variables: the use of rescue inhalers and the use of antibiotics for bronchial processes per year. The tool achieved an accuracy of 97.8% and demonstrated high concordance between classification systems. Crucially, Seleida is compatible with any electronic health record system following the international standard HL7-FHIR, making it applicable both in Spain and internationally. The developers emphasize that this model provides a transparent structure for monitoring and risk stratification at a population level, proving the effective combination of applied research and digital medicine in primary care.
