Medicom to Extend Core Platform into EHR Using SMART on FHIR

US-based Medicom Technologies is set to integrate its enterprise imaging platform directly into the electronic health record (EHR) through a new suite of SMART on FHIR applications available on the Epic Showroom’s Connection hub. This integration embeds essential imaging management tools within clinicians’ primary workspace, ensuring that healthcare providers can access actionable and accurate imaging studies within the EHR before or during ongoing care. The platform's capabilities include checkpoint functions for importing and validating external studies, data import for imaging ingestion from physical media, patient matching to ensure correct medical record number assignment, secure patient-driven image uploads, an API connector for custom integrations, and appending relevant EHR data to outgoing imaging sends. By integrating these workflows, healthcare professionals gain a thorough contextual history that facilitates quicker and more informed decision-making. Medicom CEO Michael Rosenberg stated that adopting SMART on FHIR brings image exchange directly into the EHR. He noted that while the technology has existed for years, overcoming change management was the real challenge. "Embedding them within the clinician’s workflow, syncing with existing orders and enhancing patient safety through multipoint matching can finally help health systems achieve a truly integrated platform for image exchange." The applications were developed in partnership with clinical leaders and are currently utilized by health systems such as NYU Langone to minimize clinical hurdles and optimize image exchange. Medicom aims that this unified approach will improve clinical efficiency, alleviate administrative burdens, and mitigate staff burnout.
