Asan Hospital Launches 'Health Information Highway' for Sharing Medical Records

This project is part of the 'Health Information Highway' program, spearheaded by the Ministry of Health and Welfare and the Korea Health Industry Development Institute. The system allows patients, based on their consent, to safely and efficiently transmit selected medical records held by multiple healthcare institutions to desired locations. Seoul Asan Hospital played a key role since July 2024, serving as a hub repository and lead institution. During this time, the hospital focused on building a cloud infrastructure compliant with the Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR) standard. Patients can use a mobile application to view, save, and share diverse information, including diagnostic details, medication prescriptions, test results (including imaging and pathology), and surgical records. The hospital noted that this system will enable medical professionals to easily reference records received from other facilities, thereby facilitating the provision of higher quality care tailored to the patient's current condition. This establishes an environment where patients can exercise data self-sovereignty and actively use data for health promotion and disease prevention.
