Google Unveils Major Investments to Enhance India's AI Ecosystem

Google is focusing on integrating AI into India's Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI), aiming to enhance efficiency and improve patient outcomes in healthcare. Specifically, it is providing $400,000 to support the development of India’s Health Foundation Models using MedGemma. Ajna Lens will collaborate with AIIMS specialists to create models for Dermatology and OPD Triaging, making them accessible through the DPI. Furthermore, a partnership with the National Health Authority (NHA) aims to standardize millions of unstructured medical records into the FHIR format. This is expected to reduce documentation burden, improve patient understanding, and enable informed policy decisions. Beyond healthcare, Google supports India's broader R&D ecosystem. For instance, funding was provided to Wadhwani AI for piloting multilingual conversational AI assistants (HealthVaani) in public health and developing agricultural models (Garuda & AgriVaani). In research initiatives, such as at IIT Bombay, Gemma models are being leveraged to build an 'India-Centric Trait Database' covering diseases, phenotypes, and genetic conditions relevant to the Indian population. These efforts demonstrate a full-stack approach to building indigenous AI solutions aligned with India’s national development goals.
