Google and NHA Partner to Digitize Medical Records using AI

Google has committed over $400,000 in funding to enhance healthcare efficiency across India, utilizing MedGemma, a collection of open-source, medically tuned vision-language foundation models. As an initial step, Google will collaborate with experts from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) to build models supporting India-specific use cases in dermatology and out-patient department (OPD) triaging. Crucially, Google is also working with the National Health Authority (NHA) to deploy advanced AI for converting medical records into a machine-readable format compliant with the Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR) standards. The company stated that this shift is expected to help patients better understand their medical information, reduce documentation burden on both patients and hospitals, and inform data-driven policy decisions for India’s public healthcare strategy. Furthermore, Google is making over 400,000 NHA-registered health facilities (hospitals, clinics, etc.) searchable on Google Maps and Search, allowing people to easily find updated official information about nearby care centers. Separately, the philanthropic arm, Google.org, announced an $8 million funding for four centers of excellence at various Indian institutions, contributing to India's digital public infrastructure.
