FHIR (Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources) emerged to solve the data sharing challenges inherent in older standards like HL7 v2 or CDA, which were message-heavy and complex. Built on modern web technologies such as JSON and REST APIs, it uses a modular concept called 'resources' to structure and exchange data—such as patient demographics, observation results (vitals), and medication orders. This system achieves interoperability at multiple levels: syntactically, through standardized formats like JSON/XML; semantically, by integrating coding systems such as SNOMED CT and LOINC to preserve clinical meaning; and process-level, by reflecting entire care workflows. FHIR provides developer-friendly APIs, enabling rapid application development without requiring deep expertise in legacy standards. This accelerates the implementation of innovative digital health services like AI diagnostic tools and remote monitoring apps.
