Drummond surveyed health IT developers concerning their compliance plans for certification criteria adopted in the ONC HTI-4 Final Rule. This survey captures the industry's response to new requirements for electronic prior authorization (ePA). The key areas investigated included whether an organization planned to certify to the new ePA API criteria, and whether they would use self-developed technology or a third-party solution. Developers also ranked their reasons for seeking certification and detailed the methods they plan to use to test their ePA solutions. Furthermore, the survey addressed how providers would meet the ePA MIPs measure if they did not plan to certify. The findings suggest growing momentum across the industry toward meeting these new electronic prior authorization API standards. However, this progress is accompanied by increasing complexity, as evidenced by the mixed implementation strategies and wide variation in testing plans among organizations. This survey highlights the current state of standardization efforts and technical challenges within the health IT sector, particularly regarding the critical process of pre-authorization.
