Summary

Abridge, an AI platform, and Availity, a real-time medical information network, have partnered to revolutionize the prior authorization process. They are building a new system that uses clinical conversations between doctors and patients as the starting point for efficient and transparent necessity reviews.

Details

Abridge, established in 2018, provides an enterprise AI platform that analyzes doctor-patient conversations and converts them into clinically and billable documentation at the point of care. Availity operates one of the largest real-time medical information networks in the US and offers a FHIR-native intelligent utilization management solution with its API infrastructure. This collaboration moves beyond traditional models where providers and payers build separate AI systems. It enables the sharing of clinical context (the conversation) in real time. Specifically, Availity's FHIR-compliant APIs instantly reflect payer policies and requirements into the point-of-care workflow, while Abridge's contextual understanding engine visualizes necessary clinical information during the conversation and assists with documentation required for prior authorization. This linkage aims not only to improve prior authorization but also the entire revenue cycle. By identifying and supplementing missing documentation during the consultation, it reduces subsequent rework or additional procedures, enabling faster, patient-centered care. The platform is currently used in over 200 medical systems and is expected to support over 80 million patient-doctor conversations annually by 2026.
