February 5, 2026SAMHSA

Summary

An initiative led by SAMHSA is advancing efforts to improve behavioral health data exchange and interoperability. This aims to enhance care coordination for patients with chronic physical conditions, preventing medical errors and gaps in care.

Details

This $20 million effort, spearheaded by ASTP/ONC and SAMHSA, utilizes the USCDI+ Behavioral Health (USCDI+ BH) dataset and the FHIR® Behavioral Health Profiles Implementation Guide (BH IG). The goal is to improve behavioral health information technology (BHIT) through nine pilot projects across various locations. These pilots test standardized data elements and technical specifications in real-world settings, identifying best practices and challenges related to care coordination, federal/state reporting, patient access, and consent management. Participating states include Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Massachusetts, North Carolina, Oregon, Rhode Island, and Washington, DC. The initiative also explores AI integration. The knowledge gained will inform a comprehensive 'Behavioral Health Information Resource,' planned for release in 2027, contributing to the creation of a more interoperable healthcare system.
