HL7 Launches Real-Time Medical Device Interoperability Accelerator

HL7 launched the 'Caliper FHIR® Accelerator' on March 5, 2026, establishing a new implementation community focused on exchanging and integrating data from medical and personal health devices. The necessity for this accelerator stems from the challenge that high volumes of critical device data—generated in diverse settings like ICUs or operating rooms—are often 'siloed,' preventing clean flow into EHRs or analytics platforms. By leveraging HL7 FHIR alongside established device communication frameworks, Caliper aims to build a scalable, standards-based foundation for real-time device data integration. The initiative builds upon complementary international standards from IEEE, ISO, IEC, and IHE, as well as decades of work from the HL7 Devices Work Group. The goal is to transform device interoperability from a technical aspiration into an operational reality. This community brings together organizations with deep implementation experience across the healthcare and technology ecosystem. This foundational interoperability is critical for safely deploying advanced analytics and AI by ensuring consistent, reliable access to high-quality, real-time data, thereby improving both clinical outcomes and operational resilience globally.
