CMS has announced plans to dramatically raise the bar for interoperability standards in healthcare through a comprehensive proposed rule (CMS-0062), slated for 2026 implementation. A key feature of this rule is its focus on drug prior authorization (PA) processes, supplementing existing medical procedure APIs. The major changes include making Da Vinci FHIR Implementation Guides mandatory and expanding the scope of regulated payers to include small group market plans. Furthermore, it extends electronic prescribing standards like NCPDP SCRIPT to cover Medicaid and QHP issuers.
