Seoul National University Hospital Launches Remote Monitoring Service for Clinical Trials, Eliminating the Need for Hospital Visits

The Clinical Trial Center at Seoul National University Hospital announced the launch of its next-generation 'Remote Monitoring Service,' advancing the establishment of a Decentralized Clinical Trial (DCT) environment. A key feature is that it enables stakeholders to confirm and manage data without requiring physical visits to the hospital. Significantly, this service successfully implemented the necessary 'data linkage' for remote monitoring—a process previously delayed by institutional cooperation issues and regulatory hurdles. This was achieved by building upon CTDW (Clinical Trial Data Warehouse) and CTMS (Clinical Trial Management System). Consequently, safe data confirmation and management are now possible from outside the hospital even in multi-site clinical trials. Furthermore, the service was designed to comply with HL7 FHIR, the next-generation international healthcare data standard. Its usability and security were enhanced through real-data testing targeting global pharmaceutical companies and CRO monitors. The hospital has established cloud-based remote connection links with institutions like Gachon University Gil Hospital and Chungbuk National University Hospital, planning future expansion to advance multi-site clinical trial environments. This achievement is part of the 'DECENT Initiative,' supported by the National Clinical Trial Support Foundation, resulting from consortium research involving multiple hospitals and IT companies centered at SNU Hospital. It aims to promote non-face-to-face clinical trials and enhance competitiveness in new drug development.
