Modernizing the Infrastructure for Digital Collaboration: Enhancing Healthcare Data Sharing in Sweden

Inera AB is modernizing the digital infrastructure (the National Service Platform) built over many years with regions and municipalities. This platform enables various IT systems used by caregivers to exchange information across organizational and geographical boundaries, currently handling around 500 million calls monthly. The core of this upgrade involves implementing FHIR (Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources), an internationally established healthcare informatics standard that many new health information systems and applications already support. This effort aligns with Inera's new reference architectures for interoperability and the requirements set by the European Health Data Space (EHDS) regulation, which governs cross-border information exchange. Furthermore, a key focus is establishing interfaces and methods to simplify connection and integration of various systems, particularly in preparation for EHDS. This will open up access to nationally shared health data not only to regions but also to medtech vendors who previously could not connect to the infrastructure. The new technology will be implemented through a gradual transition process that does not disrupt the high volume of information exchange currently handled by existing interfaces. The goal is to accelerate local innovation and maximize the value derived from all existing connections, positioning the National Service Platform as a central hub for health data provision, rather than merely providing services like 1177 journal or NPÖ.
