E-Santé : Le Burundi numérise et unifie son systÚme médical pour en finir avec la paperasse - AITN
Summary
The government of Burundi is building a national Health Information System (SIS) to move beyond the current fragmented landscape where multiple software programs coexist. By adopting the international standard HL7 FHIR, it aims for seamless data exchange and improved reliability at the national level.
Details
Burundi currently faces challenges due to a fragmented digital landscape, with several different software platformsâsuch as DHIS2, SIDAInfo, and OpenClinicâcoexisting without communicating. To address this, the government is accelerating the establishment of a comprehensive National Health Information System (SIS). This initiative is part of the national health information development plan for 2026-2028. The core objective is to eliminate data duplication, reduce the overwhelming administrative burden on healthcare staff, and improve the reliability of medical data nationwide. Crucially, the system aims to adopt international technical standards, specifically HL7 FHIR. This adoption will enable fluid data exchange between disparate platforms, ensuring a unified and efficient management structure for medical information. This project represents a key example of modernizing and digitally transforming public health systems in developing nations.
