OMOP Vocabulary Stack via API: Solving Data Interoperability Infrastructure Challenges

OMOPHub offers a platform for managing vocabularies, which are foundational to medical data analysis. Historically, vocabulary management has been fragmented—relying on downloads, cron jobs, and private forks, making it difficult to operate and scale. OMOPHub addresses this gap by providing the entire OMOP terminology stack via APIs. The service offers REST API access to over 11 million standardized concepts across more than 100 terminologies, alongside Python and R SDKs. A key feature is the "FHIR to OMOP Resolver," which resolves a FHIR Coding to its OMOP standard concept and target CDM table in a single call. Furthermore, it provides CodeSystem and ValueSet endpoints for FHIR-native applications, supporting versions from R4 through R6. It also includes semantic search (finding concepts even without knowing the code) and plans for JavaScript/TypeScript SDKs. Used by over 400 teams—including research groups, ETL developers, and RWE/HEOR teams—this solution provides a recommended standard vocabulary layer necessary for advanced secondary use, such as those preparing for the European Health Data Space. By centralizing access via an API key, users can accelerate their development cycles without maintaining infrastructure or chasing vocabulary updates.
