It utilizes an 'event-driven model,' where when a specific clinical action (event) occurs, the EHR calls an external CDS service and receives results in real time. FHIR is crucial to this process. It transmits clinical context—such as patient data or medication information—using standardized resources, and the insights from the CDS service are returned and displayed within the EHR interface in card format. The three common triggers are 'patient-view,' 'medication-prescribe,' and 'order-select,' aligning with clinician actions. For example, when a patient chart is opened (patient-view hook), relevant data is sent, identifying insights like overdue preventive screenings. This provides information at the appropriate time without interrupting the EHR workflow.
