Swaziland Medical Cooperation: Supporting AI Adoption via FHIR Standards

According to Minister of Health Shi Chong-liang, Taiwan's medical assistance in Swaziland has been ongoing for years, initially focusing on clinical services and personnel training. Recently, efforts have expanded to support the establishment of a comprehensive healthcare information system similar to Taiwan's, covering everything from outpatient registration to drug management. The next major focus is establishing an international patient record format based on FHIR (Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources) standards. This is expected to significantly accelerate the introduction of AI systems within Swaziland. A medical team affiliated with Taipei Medical University has been stationed there, assisting not only with public health and clinical care but also with building a national physician licensing system, contributing to local human resource development. They have also provided epidemic prevention support during the COVID-19 pandemic, enhancing critical care capabilities. The local government hospital receives specialized treatments—such as neurosurgery and orthopedic arthroscopy—that were previously lacking in Swaziland, providing over 10,000 medical services annually. This sustained cooperation is significantly contributing to raising the region's overall healthcare standard.
