Taiwan Supports Medical System and FHIR Standards in Friend Nation: Towards Efficiency and AI Integration

In connection with President Lai's visit, Minister Shi reported on the status of medical cooperation in Swadatini. Initially, Taipei Medical University system provided clinical services and personnel training. Recently, responding to global advancements in health IT, Taiwan has been building an HIS (Hospital Information System). This HIS includes functions for outpatient visits, registration, and pharmacy management, showing good local adoption. A key development is the introduction of 'Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources' based on the international standard FHIR. This provides a crucial foundation for AI implementation. Swadatini previously relied on fragmented processes—from registration to dispensing—and manual connections. Now, these functions are integrated into a single platform, improving patient flow and reducing administrative burden on medical staff. The system has already supported 352 patient visits during its trial operation (94.3% of whom were local residents), integrating it into daily healthcare operations. Furthermore, the adoption of a 'dual-country identification design' symbolizes the long-term partnership between Taiwan and Swadatini, positioning technology as a tool for 'digital co-prosperity.' Taiwan’s contribution extends beyond IT infrastructure; efforts include establishing national medical licensing exams and general practitioner training systems to foster local autonomy. The system has also supported major surgical procedures, laying a foundation for the sustainable development of the local healthcare system.
