Interoperability in medical data refers to the state where disparate healthcare institutions (hospitals, clinics, labs, etc.) can link their information systems, which previously operated in silos, to share common data despite differences in format or language. This mechanism functions like an integrated urban transport system. Regardless of which service a patient uses, the same data (electronic medical records, test results, medication history) becomes available consistently, preventing redundant tests and delays in information transfer. Standards such as HL7 FHIR play a crucial role as technical foundations. FHIR provides a framework for different software (EHR systems, lab systems, telemedicine platforms, etc.) to exchange data using a common 'language.' Furthermore, specialized terminologies like LOINC and SNOMED CT standardize codes for diagnoses and test items, enhancing the semantic accuracy of the data. At the national level in Brazil, networks such as RNDS (Rede Nacional de Dados em Saúde) are being established. This functions as a 'digital corridor' that aggregates critical public health data, such as vaccination records and COVID-19 test results. This allows healthcare providers to make rapid decisions based on the latest and most complete information. Especially in emergency care, real-time access to allergies or chronic conditions significantly improves patient safety. This model aims for more than just data sharing; it seeks to provide continuous, high-quality care and achieve efficient use of medical resources.
