Ministry of Health, Sports, and Culture Present Tech Application Results: Building Smart Healthcare Ecosystem with FHIR Box

At the 21st meeting of the National Science Council held on May 20, 2026, three departments—MOH, Ministry of Sport, and Ministry of Culture—presented their technology application achievements. The MOH presented on the 'Next-Generation Digital Medical Platform—A New Era for Taiwan's Smart Healthcare Ecosystem with FHIR Box,' proposing a mechanism for integrating health data using proprietary technology. Previously, electronic medical records lacked interoperability, but the 'FHIR Box' functions as an open standard, serving as a foundational medical data exchange OS capable of aggregating diverse hospital data. The MOH deputy director explained that implementation will start by subsidizing platforms at medical centers, followed by testing in smaller hospitals and planned rollout to regional hospitals by the end of next year. Furthermore, Chairman Wu Cheng-wen emphasized that standard unification would greatly facilitate remote and home healthcare, enabling international market expansion. The Ministry of Sport proposed a strategy balancing public health and industrial promotion using technology, while the Ministry of Culture showcased achievements in content deepening and cross-border application via technology. This initiative marks a critical step in Taiwan's medical data standardization, with the FHIR Box aiming to build a national infrastructure rather than just system linkage.
