Digital Health Transformation in Nepal: Data Utilization through Standardization and Integration

The digital health platform developed by Aamako Maya aims to integrate the entire healthcare infrastructure of Nepal under the concept of 'One Health System, One Data, One Nepal.' This system functions as a comprehensive digital infrastructure, connecting existing national health management information systems (HMIS) such as DHIS2, eLMIS, and EMR/EHR platforms into a single, interoperable ecosystem. It enables seamless health information exchange across federal, provincial, and local levels. Technically, the platform establishes national-level registries (for clients, facilities, workers, etc.) while adopting global standards like HL7 FHIR, ICD-11, and SNOMED CT to ensure data consistency and interoperability. Specifically, the Health Information Exchange (HIE) implements a national interoperability layer using FHIR-based APIs and master patient indexing (MPI), enabling secure data sharing across fragmented health systems. This integrated platform supports real-time dashboards, GIS-based mapping, and predictive analytics for evidence-based planning, covering areas like maternal health, disease surveillance, and vaccine coverage. Governed by the Ministry of Health and Population (MoHP) in Nepal, it aligns with global goals such as SDGs 3, 9, 10, 16, and 17.
