Digital Health Transformation in Nepal: Strengthening Healthcare Systems through Standardization and Integration

Aamako Maya provides a platform in Nepal designed to connect all healthcare facilities—including hospitals, clinics, and public health programs—into a single interoperable digital ecosystem. This Comprehensive Digital Health Infrastructure (CIHIS) integrates existing systems like DHIS2 and HMIS with Electronic Medical Records (EMR/EHR) and disease surveillance systems, enabling seamless information exchange across federal, provincial, and local levels. Crucially, when establishing national-level registries for clients, facilities, workers, and products, the platform utilizes global standards such as HL7 FHIR, ICD-11, and SNOMED CT to ensure data consistency and interoperability. Furthermore, they implement a national interoperability layer (HIE) using FHIR-based APIs, enabling secure data sharing across fragmented systems. This initiative is governed by Nepal's Ministry of Health and Population (MoHP), contributing to the achievement of international goals like SDGs 3, 9, 10, 16, and 17. The services include a 'Digital Health Atlas,' which uses geospatial intelligence for monitoring health system performance. It also provides real-time dashboards and predictive analytics for decision support.
