Onward Launches Bi-directional SMART on FHIR Integration, Connecting Patient Transportation Directly to Any EHR

Onward addressed a key challenge in healthcare—the fragmentation of patient transportation information—by launching its bi-directional SMART on FHIR integration. This update enables the direct flow of structured, real-time transportation data into modern EHR systems (including Epic, Cerner, Meditech, and Point Click Care) while simultaneously allowing patient context to flow back into the Onward platform. The previous workflow for transfer center staff was cumbersome: after booking a ride, they had to manually re-enter every detail—transport type, vendor, location, special equipment needs—into the EHR's case management module and visit/discharge note. Onward’s solution leverages open interoperability standards, eliminating the need for custom middleware or lengthy build timelines, providing a seamless single sign-on experience. The integration uses OAuth2 and SMART on FHIR for authentication, ensuring full HIPAA-compliant, encrypted data transmission and audit logging across both platforms. The system was built and validated in partnership with UCSF Health and is already live with other leading organizations such as Stanford and HonorHealth, demonstrating readiness at scale.
