Australia Sets Out National Framework for Digital Health Standards

The Australian Digital Health Agency has released its National Framework for Digital Health Standards, aiming to improve interoperability, collaboration, and support secure information sharing throughout the Australian healthcare sector. The Agency states that these standards are foundational for safe and meaningful health information exchange. The framework addresses historical issues where standard adoption varied due to system owners' discretion or lack of national governance. Key initiatives include developing FHIR core standards for information sharing and promoting the national adoption of terminology and coding maps, which provides a consistent foundation for AI implementations. Progress has been made through the establishment of Health Connect Australia, enabling near real-time data transfer between clinical systems and My Health Record via API exchanges. The framework proposes five strategic recommendations: establishing an enduring governance model to oversee adoption; building workforce capability; creating a vibrant standards community; promoting awareness; and offering practical support. Governance efforts include reviewing existing national arrangements and proposing a structure to facilitate inter-governmental collaboration. Furthermore, the Agency plans to develop a central standards information hub and provide training focused on utilizing FHIR standards for health information exchange.
