This document is the specification sheet for the 'Location' resource as defined in FHIR R4 (Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources Release 4). The purpose of this resource is to standardize the representation of information regarding physical locations or facilities within a healthcare setting. Structurally, it includes basic identification elements (such as `id`, `meta`, and `identifier`) alongside detailed components. For instance, fields are defined for human-readable names (`name`), alternate names (`alias`), and descriptive text (`description`). A particularly critical aspect is the description of geographical information and operational status. Absolute geographic coordinates must be provided via a 'Position' backbone element, requiring latitude and longitude to accurately pinpoint physical locations. Furthermore, the 'hoursOfOperation' element allows for setting opening hours and operating days by week, providing detailed availability information. Moreover, this resource functions beyond just an address. It can define relationships such as which organization is responsible (`managingOrganization`) or if it is part of another location (`partOf`). By using coded elements like 'type' and 'mode', the location's role and kind can be classified.
