Cognizant Opens TriZetto Unify Prior Auth APIs for AI Agents, Accelerating Healthcare Processes

Cognizant introduced agent-ready access to its TriZetto Unify healthcare platform, treating AI agents as first-tier users via a new headless API model. The initial live solution is Electronic Prior Authorization (EPA), designed to accelerate prior authorization decisions. EPA is a digital process that streamlines the exchange of paperwork needed for coverage approval before services are rendered, replacing manual methods like phone calls and faxes. The release adds FHIR-based APIs for checking authorization needs, required documentation, and request submission, and also supports the emerging Model Context Protocol. Cognizant notes that TriZetto platforms already support over 200 million members and process more than $500 billion in annual healthcare spend. This announcement advances Cognizant’s AI strategy by targeting prior authorization—a major U.S. healthcare bottleneck affecting 95% of physicians. The goal is to speed up the approval workflow while ensuring that clinical judgment remains with human clinicians, thereby reducing delays and administrative costs for patients and providers.
