Current hospital information systems utilize standards like HL7 and FHIR for data integration and visualization (information level). However, a significant challenge exists: various medical devices (ventilators, monitors, pumps) often generate data using proprietary protocols. This data is typically limited to documentation purposes and cannot be used for therapeutic support. The solution presented is the SDC (Service-oriented Device Connectivity) standard, based on IEEE-11073. SDC provides a web service architecture enabling safe, dynamic, bi-directional communication between medical devices around the patient's bed and HIS. This transition moves data from mere 'documentation data' to 'Medical Grade Data' suitable for clinical decision-making and therapy support. Interoperability progresses through stages: 1) Integration (data collection), 2) Visualization (insight generation), 3) Assistance (clinical decision support), 4) Remote control, and 5) Automation. SDC is positioned to enable all these advanced levels in acute care settings. Practical applications include achieving a 'Quiet ICU.' By ensuring system interoperability (monitor, ventilator, pump, alarm distribution), alarms can be reliably transmitted from the patient room to the responsible caregiver, allowing the source device's sound to be muted. This improves safety and reduces stress. Another example is Remote Care, where monitoring data and ventilator/anesthesia equipment data can be viewed and controlled in real-time outside the patient room using SDC, aiding infection prevention and reducing staff burden.
