Automating Medical Record Digitization with Amazon Bedrock Data Automation and AWS HealthLake

This solution is a technical deep dive on automatically digitizing scanned PDF electronic health records into FHIR R4-compliant data. The process utilizes an event-driven serverless pipeline: upon PDF upload to S3, AWS Lambda triggers the workflow. Amazon Bedrock Data Automation (BDA) extracts information from over 50 clinical fields without needing template configuration. Subsequently, AWS HealthLake validates, indexes, and exposes this data as FHIR R4 via standard APIs. The system can be deployed in 15-20 minutes using CloudFormation with least-privilege IAM roles. This technology achieves large-scale medical record digitization without custom ML models, maintaining security controls while making historical patient data usable by modern clinical systems. For handling PHI (Protected Health Information), strict compliance measures such as AWS BAA and VPC isolation are required.
