Black Book Research conducted a study based on feedback from health plans and managed care clients. Vendors were evaluated across areas such as Interoperability, FHIR/API, Consent, Terminology, and Identity Resolution. Experts note that payer interoperability has moved beyond the transport layer into 'identity-resolved, consent-governed, terminology-normalized data operations.' FHIR endpoints are now considered baseline requirements. The critical focus is on integrating data across clinical, administrative, provider, and member systems to make it usable in production workflows for managed care or value-based contracting. Health Gorilla's top ranking was attributed not only to functional breadth but also to comprehensive performance based on 18 Key Performance Indicators (KPIs). These KPIs covered areas like 'Workflow fit,' 'Implementation performance,' and 'Data quality and usability.' They ranged from AI governance and security posture to compliance readiness, time-to-value, and total cost/value realization. The results underscore that interoperability is no longer merely a compliance function but a core operational requirement for health plans. Eighty-two percent of respondents cited FHIR/API readiness and usable data exchange as essential. Furthermore, 77% elevated cybersecurity, identity management, API security, privacy, governance, risk, and third-party exposure to enterprise-risk or board-level concern status.
