The NHI is strengthening its electronic health record (EHR) and health data exchange foundation by utilizing the international LOINC standard. While pilot implementations have been ongoing since 2007, standardization has accelerated significantly following the completion of 5,050 Taiwan-specific LOINC cross-reference tables, spearheaded by the Ministry of Health and Welfare. This national common reference table covers approximately 99% of NHI-covered laboratory tests. Future efforts are focusing not only on data upload but also on improving data exchange capabilities in advanced clinical applications, such as cancer precision medicine and NGS gene testing. Furthermore, the Ministry has developed FHIR format conversion tools and API modules, simplifying integration with hospital information systems (HIS/LIS) and aiming to build a nationwide foundation for medical information interoperability.
