The healthcare industry is currently focused on technical readiness—such as API adoption and prior authorization workflows—for the January 1, 2027, interoperability deadline. However, this article argues that mere compliance is insufficient; the critical need is for 'trust' and 'governance.' Initiatives like CMS-Aligned Networks are attempting to establish shared operating principles and trust beyond regulatory requirements. Despite technical advancements (like FHIR adoption and maturing API frameworks), the fundamental challenge remains governance: agreeing on who has access, how accountability is maintained, and how data should be exchanged. These collaborative efforts bring together diverse stakeholders (payers, providers, vendors) to discuss standardized operational processes, reducing variability and increasing predictability. The article emphasizes that interoperability must be treated as an 'enterprise transformation' rather than just a software implementation project.
