Season Three of the Sparked Podcast delves into a major Australian digital health initiative. It explores how Australia's national Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR) accelerator is transforming healthcare through collaboration and community-led standards development. The program, led by CSIRO’s Australian e-Health Research Centre in partnership with the Australian Department of Health, Disability and Ageing, the Australian Digital Health Agency, and HL7 Australia, aims to accelerate nationally consistent digital health standards. The goal is to allow health information to move more safely, seamlessly, and meaningfully across the entire healthcare system. Crucially, Sparked places community participation at its core, moving beyond traditional technology projects. Through technical design groups and clinical working groups, those who build systems, deliver care, and use services collectively co-design solutions addressing real-world needs. Over 1,500 members have contributed over 30,000 volunteer hours. The season tackles major challenges including global interoperability reform, national collaboration between states, Indigenous data sovereignty, women's digital health, consumer empowerment, and the role of standards in safe AI. The podcast emphasizes that these standards are essential infrastructure, telling stories about the people—clinicians, policymakers, researchers, etc.—who are building the foundations for better healthcare for all Australians.
